Rebuilding communities: What about the workforce? May 4, 2006

Great day for economic development in the blog review; tough day for the workforce.

Smart City Memphis has a terrific post about the post-1976 turnaround of that city, complete with action points that have been accopmlished and have yet to be undertaken.

Houston Strategies offers an outstanding juxtaposition of the "Opportunity City" v. "Pleasantville" – and which civic model will be more successful going forward. (Want to guess which?)

One question: Where is the workforce component of reviving the city?

Well, 21 Apples doesn't talk up civic renewal, but it DOES consider the needs of today's (and tomorrow's) computer science workers – especially problem solving skills. Here's a great quote from that passage:

We need to be training our students to be problems solvers, not fact-repeaters.

So true. Give me an army of problem-solvers, and I'll show you a community ready for revival.
