New book on the way August 3, 2006Posted by Tom in Opinion, Research.
“Manufacturing Works” by Fred Zimmerman and Dave Beal was just highly recommended to me by the IPFW Community Research Institute‘s John Stafford – the same man who recommended Jon Teaford’s “Cities of the Heartland.” John and I worked together on the Northeast Indiana Strategic Skills Initiative (John and his associate, Valerie Richardson, did nearly all of the statistical research while I hit the road for first-person, expert opinion), and he is one impressive individual with a wealth of knowledge and perspective. Not to mention that he’s a genuinely nice man.
“Heartland” was a great book, telling the story of the Midwest’s major cities’ rise, peak and decline. It is a wonderful primer on the “rust belt” and how it came to the state that it’s in.
I tell you that to say: If you like the content of this site and have an interest in the alignment of workforce and economic development and if John Stafford recommends a book….well, it’s a pretty safe bet that the book is at least worth the money. Amazon got mine!
